§ 61. PRIVILEGE TAXES.

  • That that portion of the charter of the Town of Indianola, as amended, providing for the collection of fifty per centum of the privilege tax levied by the laws of the State of Mississippi, as now provided by said charter as amended, be and the same is hereby repealed, and a tax of fifty per centum of the amount now or hereafter levied by the laws of the State of Mississippi, on privileges, is hereby levied, and the same shall be, by the tax collector of this town, collected; provided, however, that all persons and corporations liable for privilege tax who shall fail to procure the license required during the month in which it is due shall be liable for double the amount of the tax, and it is hereby made the duty of the tax collector of this town to collect the amount, issue a separate license therefor, and to endorse across its face, "collected as damages," and provided further that the tax collector of this town be, and he is, entitled to retain one-half of such damages so collected by him as compensation for his extra service in addition to the regular commissions now allowed by the law of said town on the regular collections, and it shall not be necessary that an ordinance be adopted to carry this section into effect, it being the intention to have same self executing provided this section shall not apply to the privilege taxes paid to this town prior to the time this amendment is approved.
