§ 74. METHOD OF APPOINTMENT; TERMS.
The mayor and board of aldermen of this municipality shall elect a clerk and a marshal for this municipality at their first regular meeting after each general election for mayor and aldermen for this municipality, or as soon thereafter as may be deemed practicable, having due regard for the public interest and the clerk and marshal may each be elected for such term as the mayor and board of aldermen may deem advisable; provided, however, that neither the clerk nor the marshal shall be elected for a term extending beyond the term for which the mayor and board of aldermen making the election were themselves elected, and provided, further, that the mayor and board of aldermen shall have the power to fill all vacancies that may occur in either the office of clerk or the office of marshal at any regular meeting or at any special meeting legally called for that purpose.
