  • The officers of this municipality shall be a Mayor and five Aldermen. The Mayor shall be elected at large. The municipality shall be divided into five wards with one Alderman to be selected from each ward. Each Alderman shall be a resident of the ward which he purports to represent. The general municipal election shall be held in this municipality on the second Tuesday of December, A. D., 1949, and every four years thereafter, for the election of a Mayor and five Aldermen. The officers elected shall qualify and enter upon the discharge of their duties on the first Monday of January after such election, and shall hold their offices for four years and until their successors are duly elected and qualified.

    (a)

Until otherwise changed, the marshal shall be appointed by the mayor and board of aldermen, to serve for a term of four years, but subject to be removed at any time, at the pleasure of the mayor and board of aldermen. The marshal shall perform the duties ordinarily incident to that office, as now provided by the charter of the City of Indianola, as amended, with the exception that hereafter the marshal will not be superintendent or have charge of the streets and waterworks, and hereafter all matters pertaining to the repairing and maintaining of streets and the maintaining of waterworks and such, that have heretofore been supervised under the direction of the marshal, will be done and maintained under the direction of the mayor and board of aldermen. The marshal shall perform the duties ordinarily incident to that office, as herein defined, and such other duties as may, from time to time, be imposed on him by the mayor and board of aldermen.

    (b)

The mayor and board of aldermen of this municipality shall appoint a marshal for this municipality at their first regular meeting after such general election for mayor and aldermen for this municipality, or as soon thereafter as may be deemed practicable, having due regard for the public interest. The mayor and board of aldermen shall employ such other officers, subordinate officers and employees as they may deem necessary and proper to the conduct of the city affairs.
